ance music loves the intro. It gives producers time to set the mood and DJs time to mix from one track to another. Without it, we’d be stuck at a perpetual Bar Mitzvah, waiting for fifteen seconds or more to catch the groove of the next song after it comes on. In Flagranti dispense with the intro on their debut album, Wronger Than Everyone Else, but trust us: this is one Bart Mitzvah you won’t want to miss.

Where to start? How about naked chicks? In Flagranti’s got ‘em. One-half of the group, Alex Gloor, made a short video for each track (available at the group’s website) in which eroticism is often the name of the game. Hip dance music? In Flagranti’s got that too. The vast majority of the track’s here fall somewhere in the funky disco/house side of things. Beer? Well, you might have to bring that.

The point is: Wronger is a constant party. Seeking to make the album like one of cosmic purveyor Daniele Baldelli’s famed mixtapes, the duo cut the fat from 17 of their tracks and present them in three-minute chunks back-to-back-to-back. It alternately makes for a great and frustrating listen. Some songs you’ll want to hear more from, others you’ll be glad to see end quickly. It’s a trick reminiscent of Mr. Oizo’s Analog Worms Attack: get in, get out, leave them wanting more.

Clearly, the group’s aesthetic is of a piece: the videos are appropriated from VHS sources, the graphic design utilizes classic porn and fashion magazines, and the music is created solely from samples. In short, it’s thrift store disco. With friends coming in to do vocals over top every so often. It’s a formula that you’d think wouldn’t have much legs, but Gloor and partner Sasha Crnobrnja are expert manipulators with voracious musical appetites. The references run long and deep: “Convolution” and “Teaching Children” wouldn’t be out of place on a Rapture LP; highlight “Nonplusultra” makes nod to disco, italo, and dub; “Eight Consecutive…” is bluesy seizure-pop; and “Melodymaker” is surely a lost Soulwax side.

As dance music trends further and further towards the minimal and psychedelic, it’s a pleasure to hear a group firmly devoted to the maximal and carnal. Far too many producers today are too focused on holding off pleasure, in service of keeping the dancefloor in constant motion. In Flagranti prove that it might be just as good to have a quickie every once in a while.
