READ THE REVIEW
Coloma - Dovetail
I think this record\'s great...I\'ve heard the past two Coloma records and enjoyed them too, but this one is even more bold and brave. I don\'t think I really get the art school reference. The vocals sound great to me, and the lyrics are quite nice. To not mention Roxy Music or The Aluminum Group in the context of this group seems almost criminal. And to finish it all off, \"No Moving Parts\" is one of the best songs of this year. I hear it as almost an alternate universe Scott Walker...if hadn\'t gone on to Tilt, he might\'ve gone here.
I can\'t remember the last time I made a comment, but I agree with the other comment. I thought the review was so far off. There\'s no way this album can be considered irritating if you enjoyed their first two albums (it\'s hard to tell by the review, but that\'s the impression I get). The first two albums\' music \"drew attention away from the vocals\" but this one doesn\'t? Those albums were, in my opinion, frustratingly minimal, and they forced you to focus on the vocals. \'Dovetail\' has great, memorable songs, inspired instrumentation, and a unique sound. Who really cares whether the album has \"electro-dub and down-tempo beats\" or not. Try to take the album for what it is, and not criticize it for actually existing outside the Klein mold. I can understand not liking the vocals...some people aren\'t into that thing, but the sentiment in the review seems mixed and I\'m not sure exactly what it is you don\'t like. I guess it just didn\'t connect with you. Oh well. Personally, I love the vocals, and don\'t pay that much attention to the lyrics. If they\'re \"pretentious\" that doesn\'t bother me. They certainly evoke early \'80s synth-pop. Regardless of it all, by no stretch of the imagination is this album a D. I just won\'t accept it! It was my 2nd favorite album from 2005, right behind Jeans Team\'s \'Musik von Oben\'. Also, check out the band Japan if you haven\'t heard them! Now there\'s a band to stomach.
ditto on the Japan...
