This review was written for expressly anti-literary, Monkeyfish-meets-Murdoch-meats-Moe Stooge purposes. The reviewer has also written a hatchet job. The conceptual gag of a deconstructed spankometer of a university twit. It feels good to take a sly shit on art, doesn't it? If you can't tell the difference, why pay less?
You can't sit through this record, yet you can sit still long enough to wank to the sound of your own radically self-important, jiveass, sassy addition to the world of white boy rock journalism?
Go deconstruct some Pet Shop Boys. Journalists are going to make up shit anyways. Leave the Howling Hex out of it.
McSweeney's-esque? Are you fucking serious? Put your diapers back on son. The gangrene-meets-civil defense-a-goo-goo is gettin late in the Loc Ness.
Some transmission would have to have been had beyond the red. But if you can't get the blue you cant get the red. You follow? Some people said Bad Blood is gonna FALL ON YOU. But I'm like nice and shit so I'll give you a B for your excellent use of dangling modifiers.
Warm Regards,
Nymphalid

Dear Music Journalist,
Oh yeah, I know what deconstruction means. I thought that for my foray into meta-rock journalism I should like flash the word around like a shiny, useless jewel why I was deconstructing your spankometer.
The record has actually gotten a lot of good reviews, and is far from being ignored for a small independent record that's not contingent on a clear and easily digestible rock image. Most people I've heard who really like the record say it makes them shake their ass (thinking all the while of roland barthes naked). They don't find it hard to listen to at all. It's sexy and earthy ( and we haven't even discussed the political dimensions-look at the damn cover!), and I wouldn't call intense repetition in music a deconstructive trick or a high-concept put-on.
Excuse me for going apeshit on the review. Reading it again, you do make some very interesting and valuable observations.
What I don't like is your positioning of NMH in terms like kindergarten/retard/autism. Looking back I see that I missed some of your very fine points for one because I didn't like the retard artist treatment that is so typical and so nowhere. Second, if you're going to pepper yr review with some of Neil's writing/lyrics, don't claim you threw them into the review stew for "anti-literary" purposes, and end it with 'oh, and he wrote a book'.
So, maybe it's a Mollie Hatchet job, after all. His book is called Public Works, btw. He is easily as fine a writer as Stewart Home and Kathy Acker, working in a same vein, and I don't think his literary work, both in music & on the page, deserves a quiet sneer. Hell, he's better than half of the post-avant poets out there. The work is far beyond most McSweeney's jokey, radically sheltered and middle class dopiness. Maybe this was a compliment from you? Yeah, okay, sorry for threatening to throw your body DOWN IN THE RIVER FULL OF CHAINS. Seriously.
bunches of sunny kisses, Nymphalid
