Hipster or Not? - Pop Playground

I really liked the blurb for this columnn (The column was good too).

I enjoyed this article a lot. The unearthing of previously suppressed, or obfuscated, discourses of power within our shared semantics is one of the most interesting, and socially worthwhile, methodologies of contemporary academia. But, as someone who has used the ‘hideous’ word scenester (and probably hipster) in work published here at Stylus, I feel obligated to respond with a counterpoint. Ask yourself this: do you know, or have you known, persons that you would describe as scenesters or hipsters? If the answer is YES then I think it is appropriate to use those terms. The fact we are discussing this issue proves one thing: we are all Music Dorks.

I dig the column. I used have a pretty song anti-hipster streak. Looking back, I can see that pretty much all of my animosity stemmed from fact that some kid with intentionally clunky glasses and a crappy record collection stole my girlfriend. I'm a little ashamed of it, but it did happen. I guess I can just be glad I'm past it now. Gavin, keep up the good work. I'm curious what you make of the Superbowl halftime show. Anybody else bothered that only 1 or 2 songs performed were recorded in the last 2 years?

i agree it's a good article - but could use some fleshing out? the author gets provacative saying anti-hipster witch hunts (i love that term) "bring down many of the best parts of modern culture (esp. youth culture) down with it." huh? makes it sound like a pretty big deal. maybe it is? maybe it isn't? i have noticed a "hipster backlash" here in nyc over the last few years. would like to see a more in-depth look at this.
