Yikes. Some of the individual lists are downright frightening. "Yi Yi" and "Werckmesiter Harmonies" both deserve places on the overall list.

very good list. where's the love for eternal sunshine of the spotless mind though? i'll admit that i've only seen about half of the movies on the list and i'll make it a point to go netflix the others, but, eternal sunshine deserves better.

I enjoyed Children of Men a fair amount up until the ending, which I thought was far too hopeful and unrealistic. So I guess my problem with it is about the opposite of everyone elses.

Great list...and I haven't even seen half of the films on the list. You actually make me want to go back and watch Bringing Out the Dead and A.I. (two films I nearly walked out of). Has the film reviewing staff thought about forming a splinter site? I will really miss your reviews as I search the interweb for enlightenment.

i flat out didn't enjoy "children of men." my choice for number one would have to be "derailed;" one of the most critically hated films of the "millenium." seriously though, get amongst it people!

It seems like most of you have almost only seen american movies in the past 7 years. Why not make a "Top American Filmes of the Millennium" instead? I have nothing against american cinema, which is still the best in the world, but shuldn't it be weird to find out that 8 out of the 10 millenium best movies are american?. By the way, great list from David Pratt-Robson.

yes. i agree. this list is rather pasty (SIC, sry). i understand that this is the inevitable result of democratic listmaking, and most people have american film as homebase. I am NOT a contrarian snob when i say "how sad", and that it is no home base of mine, in spite of my being a white north american (who grew up on it, no less). no disrespect to any of the films on this list, or the writers whose consensus they cull, but from where i stand, the relative lack of asian content is pretty hard to swallow. it represents way to much of what is most exciting to me in film today, both in terms of form and content, and this list misrepresents how the current climate of cinema feels to me at this moment, and for the duration of this swiftly closing decade. to cobble together a quick ten: the Wayward Cloud (Tsai), the Sun (Sokurov), Three Times (Hou), Exils (Gatlif), Notre Musique (Godard), Nobody Knows (Kore-eda), Unknown Pleasures (Jia), Syndromes and a Century (Weerasethakul), Gerry (Van Sant), and maybe Code Unknown (iffy choice) (Haneke). That New World and Tenenbaums (for example) don't show up on mine is not a testament to the weakness of american film but the strength of film from, y'know, the rest of the world. Of course there's still no women: a problem.
