Nice. Pretty much every song on that album, and the new one even, is worthy of this close examination. Truly though, "A Stone" is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.

Beautiful song definitely worthy of a seconds column.

The lyrics in "A Stone" isn't written by Sheff. Its actually written by Tim Harden. Go the link and see for yourself http://wm09.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fzfpxqwsldae

That's an error. Will Sheff definitely wrote it.
Great article. This song kills me everytime. The lyrics leading up to 4:32 are some of my favorite ever...

I could be wrong, but I know for sure Hardin wrote "Black Sheep Boy" which Okkervil River's album is based around. Considering what Sheff has said about Hardin and the admiration Sheff has for the man himself, it isn't too far fetched to believe that Hardin wrote "A Stone." Just a thought... http://www.saidthegramophone.com/archives/said_the_guests_will.php

Sheff wrote "A Stone". "Black Sheep Boy" is the only Hardin cover on the album.

I'd like to see an examination of So Come Back, I Am Waiting. There's a point where the cello is so low and sonorous, it gives me chills every time. Like it's speaking, or trying so hard to say something but just doesn't have the language, or is trying so hard to make me understand its language but can't. Anyway, great piece about a great song.
