Hootie and the Blowfish - Cracked Rear View - The Diamond

This analysis is a bit overblown. It also lacks a feminine perspective, which was crucial to Hootie's success. I see this as more of an album that minivan-driving soccer moms bought en masse. One more thing, if dentist's offices had soundtracks then all the singles from this album would be on it.

the mid-90s perhaps MOR adult alternative's hey day: Counting Crowes, Matchbox 20, Semisonic, Third Eye Blind, Sugar Ray etc.. that's when soccer mom's and mid life crisis men ruled supreme.

Unbelievably, the Blowfish were on Emeril Live last night, playing some jams in between each dish. Emeril kept referring to Darius as "Hootie" and we all know he doesn't take kindly to that.

I know plenty of men who like Hootie. I think soccer moms were buying Billy Ray Cyrus at that time.

Fuck, I have a tape somewhere of a god-awful mall kiosk music video of my brother and I dancing to "Hold My Hand" in front of a blue-screened in beach. I loved this record when I was 11, it probably holds up a lot less now. Whatevs, I still like the singles way better than Young Jeezy or whoever the fucking guy is who has "YeeeAH!" as his catchphrase. I doubt a record will ever sell this well again. The kind of people who bought stuff that sells 16 million copies in 95' just steal the single from limewire now anyways.

I grew up in Columbia and was just in high school when CRV began getting popular. Literally everyone had a copy of this record at my school, which was fairly inner-city. We listened to it three times in a row on the bus back from a weekend church trip. I think you can't discount that--kids bought this record in droves until it became uncool. p.s. hit the nail on the head with columbia though. so unsexy.

Sadly(?), boilingboy said exactly what I was going to. "Middle of Nowhere" was my introduction to those guys, and it's actually pretty good! But I'm assuming there's another one out there - who's it by? Also, it's so cute that raskolnikov has resorted to making himself imaginary friends.

Don't forget the rise of roots rock into the mainstream and the formation of adult contemporary radio programming. I'm still convinced that 'Tangled up in blue' bit was a direct lure to the aging hippies whos half-baked cranium's were still pining for Dylan, Young, and Joni. Hootie filled a hole, as hard as that is to believe. Know something else flabbergasting? I heard a Third Eye Blind song on the radio the other day, and it actually sounded pretty good...
