I just don't think a case can be made that the Mekons' OOOH! is an alt-country record. The Jayhawks' Tomorrow the Green Grass is another good one that I can think of that does fit the list's description.

Thanks for the list. Marah, Old 97s and Buck 65 are all criminally under-appreciated. Well, more accurately, eras/ albums of each band are. Marah had that weird British thing and the last official Old 97s album was their first misfire for me.

Elitist? Because I wanted to pimp some lesser-known personal faves? It's not like you won't find whole trees worth of ink on Ryan Adams and Steve Earle (who are both fine and good at what they do). Consider this a guide to the holes in your collection rather than a definitive history. Listen to these if you're skeptical. Some folks can be so quick to go FUCK THIS GUY HE FORGOT MY PERSONAL FAVORITE--ELITIST! I appreciate the feedback, but I'm not writing the book here. And hammmd, I prefer El Corazon to Transcendental Blues. Really, everyone, listen to Funeral Dress.

The best Steve Earle album is I Feel Alright, hands down.

Dan, interesting response. I sympathise that the purpose of the article is not to anthologise the entire genre from the ground up. But in all fairness, 'Top 10' implies these are your favorites. Are these really your Top-10 (if so, I agree with hammmd, how could you overlook the Jayhawks), or are they just 10 underappreciated records you'd like your readers to check out?

Shut up about the Jayhawks, their best song is a Grand Funk cover.

rasm, these are the alt-country records i play the most, with a healthy awareness they're not well-known. the wussy and clem snide especially get an obscene amount of play around here. meat puppets and steve earle would've been #11 and #12. i'll try the jayhawks again, but in general i don't find them "alt" enough. also, i forgot to address cwperry earlier...i don't know how you'd slot OOOH, but until there's a genre called alt-gospel, it fits here pretty snug.
