pretty cool take on a meta-list.
Nice list, but Hey Man Nice Shot was about the televised suicide of Budd Dwyer, an American politician. How's about KMFDM Sucks: "Our music is sampled/It's totally fake/ It's done by machines/ 'Cause they don't make mistakes."
All these years and I never caught that those were the lyrics to "All the Kids Are Right." Truly forward-thinking cynics.
Also 'Solid Air' by John Martyn, which is about his friend Nick Drake.
Just an observation, I'm not passing any judgment--wow, I have never seen such a slam on Paul Westerberg in ANY publication. Very interesting! And yeah, whatta dumb lyric.
Whether this is something to brag about or not, I'm actually a huge Local H fan, and one could make the case that EVERY Local H song is about Local H sucking. Also, where is "Song 2" by Blur on this list? It's a pretty straightforward jab at the Pixies, specifically "Tame".
Good list, but it's missing one of my all-time favourite songs, "Jesus Was A Crossmaker", written by Judee Sill about J.D. Souther (who played in Gram Parsons' International Submarine Band, co-wrote the Eagles' "New Kid In Town" and "Best Of My Love", and appeared on countless records by the West Coast "mafia" in the 1970s and 1980s).
Holy crap, tcote76, are you writing a book? That's some obscure knowledge you be totin' around.
Dude, Local H kicks ass.
the story of "Jesus..." is pretty well-known, actually. As for the JD Souther bio, well, let's just say I have a hidden fondness for that smooth West Coast country rock. Now back to listening to unreleased Cold War Kids tracks before they take away my indielitist card...
What about "I.C. Water" by Psychic TV? Joy Division and New Order are mentioned so much on Stylus, it's surprising that this wonderful tribute to Ian Curtis didn't make the list. More info (including lyrics) can be found here: http://www.genesisp-orridge.com/index.php?section=article&id=65
Oh, and you do realize that 2 of the members of Rancid used to be in Op Ivy before they (meaning Op Ivy) broke up, right?
Great list, but I think I've got one crucial addition: "Tallulah" by Sonata Arctica. It's either about the drummer from some other Finnish power metal band or the drummer from SA themselves (!) stealing away the singer's girlfriend. The big line: "I see you walking hand in hand/ with long-haired drummer of the band". Slam!
I could name a plethora of better picks than these. "Scaring the Killcrow" by Lieden is all about how the lead singer grows up and decides Robert Smith is a total fake and imagines murdering him with a pickaxe in downtown New York (musta been a Salinger fan too). Next is The Ruckus` punningly titled "Britney`s Peers" about an orgy with Brit and her 3 best friends, & once again (hey it`s punk) the pscyhopathic lyrics have the guy imagining in a methamphetamine rage that they`re all barbie dolls and he snaps their heads off. For something a little less meaty, try the B-side from Death Cab`s first Photo ALbum single. It`s not explicit but I have word it`s all about the chick bass player in Galaxie 500. And finally, I, whose half brother through my mother`s side was once in a band for 3 months, wrote a song about his ex-girlfriend`s fiance whose father was shot in the Aramoana mass murder incident in 1992. My song lies unfinished on my 8 track MD recorder.
The most glaring omission is clearly Chris T-T's Eminem Is Gay. How much more explicit do you want it to be?
wtf? where is the hip/hop?
Nice one. The Pet Shop Boys also have a song about inter-male shagging with Eminem.
Neutral Milk Hotel-Naomi (about Naomi Yang) Neil Young-Stupid Girl (about Joni Mitchell, supposedly)
Ha, "pass mustard" has to be the best eggcorn I've ever heard!
Red House Painters - "Golden" - Kozelek's eulogy for John Denver
