I absolutely agree with you. t's so frustrating to go to the record store (i usually refuse to buy presents if they aren't albums or books) and buy George Winston's "Winter Solstice" for my mother who enjoys what she calls easy listening, and to purchase James Taylor records for my father who thinks he has a distinct voice. The thing is, I've tried in the past; to substitute the aggravating piano lull I tried to sneak in a Bil Evans cd under the Christmas tree. In lue of James Taylor's sleepy Adult Contemporary, Nick Drake's Pink Moon ... they don't want it. Their ears reject it like a red-headed step child. They want what they know, and to find family members who differ in this way is to be cherished. My bandmate's mother told me she heard Feel Good,Inc. on XPN and thought it was superb. But that's not what family is about, right? Christmas is the one time where we can lower standards and raise tolerance. Amen.

Hah, awesome. I'm more passive-agressive than you, I think. I typically buy them what they ask for, but then I wrap a burned copy of something more to my taste in with it. Like a bait and switch, but they still get to have the bait. It's that method that got my mom listening to Ray Lamontagne, and my sister listening to Nick Drake. Plus, this way I still get to lecture them about their music tastes, and they still get to ignore me. Everyone wins.

I bought my sister Spice Girls in 1997, at the height of my grunge/90s alternative days, because my mum (sic, Aussie) forced me to. I'm so glad that I did, because it's actually a great record, and my sister loved it.
