Dave: What did you think of the DV?

"While recent mediocre offerings from directors such as Godard and Antonioni lend credence to the argument that they’ve grown tired and out-dated"--Antonioni maybe, but, as far as I'm concerned, Godard's late-period work (Histoire(s) du Cinema, JLG/JLG, For Ever Mozart, In Praise of Love, Notre Musique) stands up remarkably well next to the best of his sixties stuff (Two or Three Things I Know About Her, Masculin-Feminin, Contempt, Weekend, My Life to Live).

I don't know. With Godard it just seems as if his films are all nostalgic for his past glory. Although, I will admit that of his more recent work I've only seen Hail Mary and Notre Musique and neither of those really impressed me. I'd be willing to give the others a chance though. As far as the digital video is concerned, I wasn't actually aware of it walking in, but sensed something was amiss when I noticed that the image looked a little too crisp. I think if anyone could make digital look good it would be Bergman, but obviously this would have been better off on film.

Actually, I'll say that while Antonioni's The Dangerous Thread of Things was a vile piece of shit, at least Notre Musique was passable. When you get right down to it, it's actually a pretty decent film, but I still think it comes off as more of a disappointment when measured against his early work.

speaking of aging directors, what'd you think of greenaway's 8 1/2 women? without comparing to Fellini's initially?
