Sophie B. Hawkins: Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover - Seconds

I first learned about this song from a live cover the eels did. Only when searching for a non-live version did I realise it was by Sophie B. Hawkins. Nothing compares to the original.

I didn't even know Sophie B. Hawkins was a lesbian. Damn it. And I've had a crush on her for all these years.

Possibly (probably) because this gets played all the time on the soft-rock radio back home, I completely missed all that subtext. Never listened to the lyrics. I kinda regret that now.

Wow - as delirious as the song itself (it always struck me as the female response to Prince's "When U Were Mine"). My Sophie B. moment came when "Beverly Hills, 90210" used it as the backdrop to Dylan and Kelly's blossoming illicit romance. Heady stuff.

"I'll Be Watching You"? Am I missing something, or was the author meaning to reference "Every Breath You Take"?

great article, great song. I saw her play live in a lesbian friendly club in canberra. All the gels bought her flowers and reciepes and her favourite foods. It was very nice. She writhed around on the floor for "damn" too. In between chairs. Would have made me bat for the other team, if i wasn't a man.
