You know what the grand thing about this film is? Singing it's title to the melody from The Rapture's "House of Jealous Lovers." I really can't help myself.

Yimou's style focuses on the visuals. The plot and action is slow in order to reflect that. They aren't supposed to be fight scenes so much as opportunities to bask in visual beauty. You're supposed to concentrate on the small things - the leaves as they fall and what have you. The story's a side issue. It's like those old chinese dramas - they're intentionally slow in order to give you time to consider, reflect, enjoy... all that jazz.

I also find your critique incredibly amero-centric. It reflects your lack of exposure, and your attempted culture imperialism.
