Crambe Repetita is my “DJ” name. “DJ”, because I do it all in the handy Sonic Foundry Acid 4.0 program. Crambe Repetita because..well, I’ll leave you to figure that out. In any case, this mix is designed specifically to showcase a current rage in dance music: the schaffel rhythm.

It’s my second mix of schaffel tracks, hence the 2.0, and I self-consciously restricted myself to not use tracks on the previous compilation. The tracklisting to that one can be found here.

For those of you not attuned to shifts in dance music culture, the schaffel rhythm seemed to take hold upon the release of Kompakt’s Schaffelfieber compilation in 2000. It was a disappointing release, overall, but pointed towards the huge variety of options available to producers willing to take a chance outside of the normal 4/4 house beat.

Alternately described as a limping house beat or a 4/4 with triplets or possibly even something in 6/8, it’s hard to define exactly what the beat is, if you’re not a serious music theory major. What IS for sure is its current popularity, it remains one of the most exciting sub-currents in the Kompakt axis going right now.

Last year’s Schaffelfieber 2 confirmed this, proving that dance producers did have something exciting to say with it and taking it far from its most popular origins in glam rock.

As for my mix, it moves quickly in its opening minutes after the introduction, goes through a rough spot in the middle (Tears for Fears to WB is a bit spotty, but I’ll stand by it) and stretches out near the end. I’m particularly proud of the first half of the mix, which I spent a great deal of time on. The last half is a bit more haphazardly thrown together, relying on the music to speak for itself. Luckily, I think Undo and Vicknoise and Lawrence do that quite well.
