T. Raumschmiere – Diving In Whiskey
Far be it for me to tell artists what they should be doing with their careers, especially when the track that I hold up as a peculiarly engaging example of their talent seems to be a throwaway track on an album filled with “blitzkrieg pop,” BUT I got to weigh in and claim that there’s no better track released between both T. Raumschmiere and Ellen Allien this year (Ellen came a lot closer to matching this, mind). What the whole thing sounds most like is Apparat, honestly, or the sound that Allien employed more heavily on her debut album. But in the end it’s just called subtlety. Something that someone who co-owns a label entitled Shitkatapult probably cares little about.
But when T. slows things down a minute, tastefully brings out the glitches to augment rather than disrupt and brings out that buzzing effect that reminds me, at least, most notably of Basteroid’s “Sonnenbrilliant,” he has my heart, my mind, and my balls. When he’s rehashing Atari Teenage Riot gestures, he only one or fewer of those things.
