Simon Petre records under the name Onethema. His latest release, Sticks for Bits was described by Stylus writer Ron Schepper as full of “prickly static emissions, morphing splatter, scratchy beats—but, reminiscent of Confield in general style as well as fractured spirit…” We asked Simon to pick a couple of his recent favorites…

Deework– Random Language, [Underdevelopment EP]

Deework’s music blew me away earlier this year when I first became aware of it. He does such a variety of different beats and sounds its really amazing, you just feel like you should give up music sometimes when you hear someone new that has such skills. Deework, subjex and the others at Bedroom Research are really cool guys and work really hard at producing some top quality shit. I chose this track from his last Ep that came out but which didn’t get enough recognition I think as it basically kicks arse in comparison to most of the electronica/hip hop cross over attempts of late. This track is amazing because he changes the style/sound within it so many times before it ends that you never get bored of listening, and the technique is pretty hardcore too! Miklos ‘The Accountant’ Kemecsi– Mal-Funk, [Adaadat: Trade and Distribution Almanac Volume 2]

I went to some Adaadat parties put on in London a few years ago and had a great time, but I haven’t really started listening to their records until recently. I really like the Adaadat label’s slightly more ‘punk’ attitude in comparison to the other established but more contrived ‘IDM’/'Electronica’ labels around. They have a habit of putting out a great variety of music which often fits between genres and is not only fun but also technically sounding really well produced. Not only that but they are really cool people to hang out with and have a good time! I chose one track by Miklos from the second Adaadat compilation. This track is cool because the melody and mood shift completely at one point in the track before returning to the main riff again, but it all flows seamlessly. I listened to this track so much when I first got it that it now brings back lots of weird memories and emotions from last year.
