- Al Gore once again demonstrates the charisma he was sorely lacking during the 2000 Presidential campaign. His joke involving being played off the stage during his supposed announcement for another run for the presidency has been the funniest thing yet.
- Mr. Miller, just because you made a cartoon about penguins, doesn’t mean you have to dress like one.
- Academy Award Winning Screenwriter Ben Affleck. Does that make anyone else shudder?
- I just remembered, Peter O’Toole was also in Caligula. I wonder if he and Mirren will reminisce about that at any point this evening.
- The Departed wins Best Adapted Screenplay. Congrats Scorsese, your little project just stole an award from the far more deserving Children of Men. Curses!
- That was awkward, were Tom Hanks and Helen Mirren herding William Monahan, writer of The Departed out the door? Is that what happens after you win? Congrats on your win, Mr. Monahan, now will you please leave the premises.
- Another monologue from Ellen, another outfit. Now I sort of wish she had stuck with the other one.
- I like the presentation for the Best Costume Design category. Get a bunch of idiots to dress up like the characters in the nominated movie and set them up on a pedestal. Why not just show a clip from the film? If they cut down on all these pointless set pieces maybe they have more time for the acceptance speeches. Honestly, I think they look forward to playing these poor people off the stage when they run on a little long.
- They’re letting Tom Cruise present an award? Ten bucks says he sneaks in an L. Ron Hubbard reference at some point.
- We’re now almost two hours into this program and I feel as if we haven’t covered anything. This has become something of a perennial disaster. The Academy spends the majority of the show dicking around with stuff and then rushes furiously through the final few categories which, incidentally, are the most important part of the evening.
- Myspace? Youtube? Hearing reference to both of these within five minutes of each other points to a troubling trend in society.
- Children of Men gets robbed again, losing to Pan’s Labryinth for Best Cinematography. Things could have been worse. Both films deserved it, so, despite my disappointment, I remain mollified.
- What’s with the whole silhouette pantomime shit? Is this the Academy Awards or the Cirque de Soleil?
- You know, I really like Robert Downey, Jr. Way to poke fun at your past transgressions buddy. One day I too will look back fondly at my excessive abuse of cocaine and parlay that into my own form of self-deprecating humor. Or did I just do that now?
- I left my bottle of beer a bit too close to the space heater. I think I might have burned my hand. Honestly, it’s quite possibly the most notable thing that’s happened all evening.
- I take that back, reminiscing about the past winners in the Foreign Language Film category has been a moving experience. The Bicycle Thief, Day for Night, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. It takes me back to a time when I actually watched decent movies. This is exactly the inspiration I need to get back on track in life.
- Well, this is certainly the biggest upset of the evening. Pan’s Labyrinth didn’t win Best Foreign Language Film, losing to The Lives of Others. I honestly don’t know what to think. Cate Blanchett, who presented the award, looked visibly taken aback. Was there some sort of miscount? What the hell happened?
- Meanwhile, Ellen remains as unfunny as ever. Can we just cool it with the Snakes on a Plane jokes now?
- Jennifer Hudson takes home the award for Best Supporting Actress. This might be my first correct prediction.
