Speaking of Gravity’s Rainbow, I learned on the Colbert Report last night that the U.S. Postal Service recently released a new set of superhero stamps featuring the noble visages of such heroes as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and… Supergirl? In any case, the real treat here is that they chose to include my personal favorite World War II era hero, Plasticman (for those who’ve read Gravity’s Rainbow his connection to the novel will be obvious). Although Stephen Colbert didn’t appear too pleased by that news – poking fun at this selection – I nonetheless remain excited by the fact that this overlooked superhero graces one of the stamps and not his more popular bastardized counterpart Mr. Fantastic.
